Arbiter of Taste

In ancient Rome the writer and politician Petronius was known as an arbiter elegantiarum or elegantiae (i.e. an “arbiter of taste”). He lived at the court of the emperor Nero and was his most trusted advisor, especially as a “judge of elegance” (a sort of master of ceremonies) and style mentor (what would now be called an image consultant).
