Restoration

These days, it’s not always easy to find people who know how to carry out a restoration with skill, professionalism, honesty and, above all, passion.

Mirabilia.gallery has a team of experts ready to help you, each specialised in different types of restoration such as:

  • Furniture
  • Wooden sculptures
  • Paintings (canvases and wooden panels)
  • Lacquer
  • Ivory
  • Gilding
  • Intaglio carving
  • Inlay
  • Fretwork
  • Vintage clothing items
  • Items with textile elements

Restoration work can be carried out on both antique and modern antique works of art for conservative purposes and, as a general rule, following a philological method (in other words, distinguishing the original parts from the repaired ones, but without completely deleting the traces of time).

At the client’s request however, we can also perform reconstructive work to restore the object to its original appearance as far as possible.

Here are some examples of restoration projects that we’ve undertaken:
Mirabilia - restauro

A small Madonna of Sorrows from late 17th century Naples, originally used in an Easter crib. The restoration involved both the wooden and the fabric parts of the statue. The face had become worn over the years, and was cleaned. Some missing fingers were reconstructed. As much as possible of the original clothing was kept, replacing just those parts that were irreparably damaged but maintaining the appearance it must have had when first made.

Mirabilia - restauro

A magnificent wooden casket from the first half of the 18th century, decorated with polychrome lacquers. Beneath the pre-existing dark green and red pattern, the restoration work revealed the original colours (aqua green and old rose), that were entirely restored to bring the object back to its original splendour.

Mirabilia - restauro

A sewing box from the first half of the 19th century, made in the Far East for the European market. Made of ivory decorated with blue china. The work involved reinforcing the ivory panels and reconstructing some missing parts to reproduce the original decoration. We also attempted to restore the box to its original appearance by adding silk threads on antique wooden reels, along with coloured pins and needles.
